This course focuses on Data Analysis (using DIBELS, progress monitoring, and classroom data), Vocabulary Development and Background Knowledge, Automaticity and Fluency, Comprehension, Writing, Curriculum Evaluation, and Next Steps. This coursework (the second of two required courses) is pending approval by the Nebraska Department of Education for the Tenet 1 requirement.
Target Audience: PreK-3rd grade teachers, administrators
Course Objectives:
- Apply research-aligned strategies to develop vocabulary and background knowledge that support comprehension.
- Describe the components of reading fluency (accuracy, rate, and prosody) and implement structured routines that strengthen automaticity.
- Strengthen understanding of dyslexia and reading comprehension difficulties
- Design instruction that intentionally integrates both strands to support deep, skilled reading comprehension.
- Incorporate writing instruction meaningfully within literacy routines.
- Evaluate curricular materials for alignment with evidence-based reading practices, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Dr. Amy Stradtmann is an Associate Professor of Education and Director of Middle-Level Education at Concordia University, Nebraska, and is responsible for the literacy education program at the undergraduate level. Before teaching at the collegiate level, Amy spent almost thirty years in Lutheran education, serving both as a teacher and administrator in both primary and secondary settings. Her passion in ministry has been working with middle school students, parents, and faculty and mentoring new teachers.

Nebraska WORDS Project
Dr. Sara Wing serves as co-investigator for the Nebraska WORDS Project, where she helps lead the WORDS team and partners directly with teachers through classroom observations and personalized coaching sessions. Her extensive background uniquely positions her to support educators across diverse settings. Before joining WORDS, Sara brought instruction to life in multiple roles: first-and-second-grade classroom teacher, reading interventionist, special education teacher, non-public Title I lead, and enrichment teacher. Her experience spans both public and parochial schools in rural and urban communities, giving her deep insight into the varied needs of Nebraska's educators.
